VENUE: Block party, along Homeland Drive just west of Palmero in Ladera Heights. Organized by a group of neighbors, one of whom is Roz Lewis, a co-worker at my secretarial day job, whom I've known since the early 1990's when we were in the same department.

PERFORMING WITH: The Jacob Johnston Trio, headed up by fine sax man/flutist/singer Jacob! Top-notch drummer Clarence Johnston will complete the group. We did this last year and were very appreciated, so it should be a great time!!

PERFORMING WITH: Fine jazz and blues "crooner" and performer Dante Chambers, on keyboard, with veteran pro drummer Clarence Johnston and "TBD" on bass. I met Dante at one of pianist/entertainer Rose Gales' jazz parties in L.A. on July 4th. We'll rehearse twice for this show, which will include jazz & blues standards & some pop/R&B!

PERFORMING WITH: The Jacob Johnston Trio, headed up by fine sax man/flutist/singer Jacob, and with superb drummer Clarence Johnston. I'll play keyboard with key bass just as I do at La Louisianne (see 7/25/08).

PERFORMING WITH: The Slim Tanner Band, polished 7-piece group led by drummer 'Slim' and his bassist brother - who are at or near the 90-year mark, respectively and going strong!!...The musicianship is top notch, and the classic dance band arrangements, a mix of "vintage" charts and many newer, reharmonized arrangements, are fun to play. I sub for fine pianist Byron Long in this enjoyable orchestra. Hopefully the fine bassist and co-leader Don will be back then!

PERFORMING WITH: A 6-pce. Dixieland group, with charts for each tune. The leader is red man Jeff Markgraf, with whom I played numerous times in 2003-2005, but not recently! This was keyboard with key bass - and we wore red and white vests and white hats with patriotic stripes. It was fun. I was referred by great reed man Bob Brandzel.

PERFORMING WITH: My "All Key'd Up" duo with wonderful performer and entertainer Joe Barile on drums & vocals, and myself on keyboard/key bass & vocals. We played and sang swing tunes and blues, and Joe did a great "Satchmo" rendition on Hello, Dolly!! We seemed to be a hit!

VENUE: Marguerite Gardens Senior P.E.O. Home, 700 N. Stoneman Ave., Alhambra. This is a 75th anniversary event that they have entitled "A Night in Paris," held under a tent in their large parking lot.

PERFORMING WITH: Great vocalist Andy Cowan, with myself on keyboard and vocals, Chris Ferrin on bass, and Gary Myer, drums/vocals. The first hour was solo keyboard (myself). Later, it was variety music with French-themed vocals - I Love Paris, April in Paris, C'est Magnifique, La Vie En Rose, Que Sera, Sera, Charade, Under Paris Skies, even As Time Goes By - featuring vocals by all but Chris. The client friends with my old friend Ed Simon. A nice time.

PERFORMING WITH: Powerful vocalist/entertainer (and professional writer/producer/director!) Andy Cowan and the Nina Beck Trio - Chris Ferrin on bass. This time, we had Ken Sherman on saxes and flute, but no drummer, to try this format out - it was good.They had us set up in the front area this time - much more room, though far from most patrons. Sinatra hits and other swing and classic Latin favorites (our newest jazz tune is "Never Will I Marry"!) were featured.

PERFORMING WITH: Andy Cowan and The Nina Beck Quartet: The ever-powerful & entertaining Andy Cowan, vocalist extraordinaire, along with fine sax man and flutist Dave Goldberg, strong bassist Chris Ferrin, and excellent drummer Rick Dante. The client came to hear us at Hip Kitty on Mar. 20th and liked us. I played ceremony music first, including a pretty song the couple sent me. I had to relocate my equipment twice - a first on any gig - luckily, I got help!

VENUE: Private community in Laguna Woods, in the clubhouse - 90th birthday party!

VENUE: RBC Recording Studio, on Melrose just east of Vine, in Hollywood. Recording session wtih fabulous vocalist and entertainer Avis Harrell.

RECORDING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell big band, a little less than full size - about 13 altogether. Avis got through at least 12 songs with the band - quite a feat in 4 hours' time!!

VENUE: Dynasty Restaurant & Club, 206 S. Locust St., Inglewood; just east of La Brea, (310) 673-5332. Full bar; no cover or minimum.

DATE: Sunday, Aug. 3rd (3rd repeat engagement)

PERFORMING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell "cookin'" 16-pce. big band, with Jimmy on trumpet and vocals, performing swing, jazz and blues favorites as per July 20th, but with a different featured vocalist, a fellow (oops, forgot his name) who sang a nice selection of Nat King Cole hits! The same upbeat, exciting energy filled the place and, as in July, a sweet lady from the housekeeping staff at my day job, Jessie, came to hear the music - she brought her son, too!

VENUE: Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club, 3301 Via Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates. Private club.

PERFORMING: Solo piano background dinner music in the dining room for the members, the baby grand was in use in another room, so I brought my own setup, which was fine. Solo piano duties at the club will now be shared between myself and Marty Harris provided this plan works out, and hopefully it will. This is a nice, relaxing gig.

VENUE: Salt Creek Grille, 760 N. Sepulveda Bl., across the parking lot from Borders, in the new El Segundo Marketplace ( NE cor. of Rosecrans & Sepulveda), El Segundo, in the cocktail lounge (full bar); (310) 335-9288. PERFORMING WITH: As a duo, on baby grand piano, with an excellent bassist I hadn't worked with before - Adam Cohen, who is part of regular L.A. performer Bill Fulton's band, among other groups. For this background jazz gig, I was booked by superb, gifted young pianist Urie Norris, from the U. of Miami - see 6/19 for more about him.

DATE: Sunday, July 27th (2nd repeat engagement)

PERFORMING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell "cookin'" 16-pce. big band, with Jimmy on trumpet and vocals, playing swing, jazz and blues favorites. As per June 8th, the dynamic vocalist/entertainer/recording artist Avis Harrell, formerly with Wayne Newton & a Ray Charles "Raelette" in the 80's, was featured - she did a terrific rendition of a classic R&B hit, "Proud Mary." The same lively enthusiasm filled up the place!

TIME: 8 PM to 12 Midnight
PERFORMING WITH: The Swing of Things 7-pce. band, led by marvelous trumpet player Barry Anthony, whom I met at the Jazz Forum jam sessions in Santa Monica. The band specializes in 30's, 40's & 50's swing hits and has a complete chart book. They perform at the Sky Room on a regular basis. Instrumentation: sax, trumpet, rhythm section w/guitar, and a talented female singer. Always a very enjoyable gig!

VENUE: La Louisianne Restaurant, 5812 Overhill Dr., L.A.; (323) 293-5073. Lively venue with Cajun and Creole-style food, full bar, festive atmosphere, and free Happy Hour jambalaya and popcorn chicken! One block east of La Brea, just so. of Slauson. Park in lot (valet after 6 PM) or on street.

DATE: Friday, July 25th (repeat engagement)
TIME: 5 PM to 8 PM
PERFORMING WITH: The Jacob Johnston Trio, headed up by fine sax man/flutist/singer Jacob, and with fine drummer "Sticks" filling in for Clarence. I play keyboard with key bass on this gig. The happy hour crowd gets into the jazz/blues as they unwind from their workweek, and they love the process!

VENUE: Maggiano's at the Grove, 189 The Grove Drive, Los Angeles; (323) 965-9665. (See Nov. 2nd, 2007 for more info.) Very busy place year-round (lots of tourists)!!

PERFORMING: Solo piano background music, on the recently-tuned baby grand in the cocktail lounge as you walk in - the usual swing tunes, show tunes, jazz standards, etc. Fine Northern Italian cuisine here, and extensive bar. Lots of TVs, too (altho' that's the case at many clubs!). I subbed for acclaimed - and thus very busy - pianist Marty Harris.

PERFORMING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell "cookin'" 16-pce. big band, with Jimmy on trumpet and vocals, performing swing, jazz and blues favorites. As per June 8th, the lively and soulful vocalist/entertainer/recording artist Avis Harrell, formerly with Wayne Newton and one of Ray Charles "Raelettes," was featured - she was really "on fire," and as before, changed her outfit for each set! The evening culminated with a Tina Turner'like rendition of Proud Mary, wherein she gathered some of her girlfriends to perform with her. What a way to thrill the already-enthusiastic crowd!

PERFORMING: Solo piano background music - American Songbook standards and show tunes, Bossas, easy listening, and originals - on the rich-sounding baby grand, for happy hour/early dinner patrons. I sub for noted pianist Alexandra Caselli at this very lively and popular venue. No cover or min.; delicious food, full bar; park in back, free after 6 pm. It was a very busy night as there was a big street event along Brand Blvd. By about 7, the place was completely jammed! As it filled up, the patrons applauded my playing more, too.

PERFORMING WITH: Obe Smith, bassist, and his quartet, "Entourage." Mainstream standards and pop jazz tunes were the focus, with terrific blues man Steve Sadd, and drummer "Louie," who is with Obe's R&B group. The audience of outdoor diners really enjoyed the music, and made some requests which we played. I didn't have to bring equipment, and the club's sound man took care of the whole set up!! Complimentary dinner and drinks were provided for the band. This is an opportunity I don't normally get, and I had to take it even tho' there was a conflict with another gig. The place was packed, like as if everyone in LA was there, and it was like 6 gigs rolled into one. I couldn't believe my eyes, and ears! My best gig EVER, BECAUSE: Later, with Jimmy's full big band, a) Clint Stacy of the Inkspots was a featured entertainer, as was the dynamic vocalist from new Orleans, Kijana; b) Councilmember Bernard Parks was an honored guest (helping Jimmy's booking assistant, Ben Middleton, celebrate his first wedding anniversary with his wife Alexine who is retired from the City of L.A.); c) an amazing tap dancer did his thing to "Cute"; and most incredibly of all, d) BARBARA MORRISON came & sang 2 numbers with the band - wow!

We "kicked it up a notch" to try and get the evening going, adding a bunch of pop/rock tunes to the swing tunes, rhumbas and polkas. It took until about 11:45 PM, but finally, the guests seemed to get into the party spirit!! I'll have Tony and Gary with me at both of the Gardena Elks gigs in early 2008, as above. The interesting part is that he is not of Italian heritage! But he has the Italian spirit in his heart, and it comes out in his enchanting singing. If you have ever heard such great singers as Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, the late Ezio Pinza, and others - you "get it." (I got this gig by answering this fine singer's Craig's List ad!...)

This was a celebration of 20th century California classical composers. I helped Harriet by accompanying her on her original composition "Mosaic." Scored also for orchestra, Harriet wrote a piano reduction to go with the cello part. It is an engaging modern work with different sections that tie in together while still conveying individual moods. I filled in for a classical pianist who often accompanies her, and after much rehearsing, we pulled it off!

I've played at this lovely lodge that's a "stone's throw" from my residence many times, both with other groups and my own, back about 6 years ago; so it was like "old times," only better! I was joined by lively South Bay-based entertainer Tony Giaimo, a bandleader in his own right who is equally facile on clarinet, sax, and vocals (he sings many popular Sinatra tunes, and others), and fine drummer/singer Gary Myers, whose smooth tenor voice can be likened to Chet Baker's. Keyboard with key bass, vocals, and bandleading was my job. The club is private but the public is welcome with reservations for a delicious fish or steak dinner, reasonably priced, plus great ballroom dancing on the big floor - this is the place to dance!

PERFORMING WITH: The Jazz Mammals, headed up by bassist Chris Ferrin, as a quintet. Chris lined up this nice outdoor gig slot, great for showcasing - he has performed for the City of Santa Monica before. Same lineup as Aug. 24th: Andy Cowan, featured vocalist; with Ken Sherman, saxes and flute; myself on keyboard; Chris, bass; and Richard Dante, drums. The band was well-received by the lively crowd, which included many families with toddlers and babies. And the food smelled and tasted great! Mangia!

PERFORMING WITH: My "All Key'd Up" quartet featuring favorite vocalist and friend, writer/director/producer Andy Cowan singing Sinatra faves and other fun tunes. On sax and flute, the super Ken Sherman; on bass, talented Chris Ferrin; on drums, a tasty, steady player, Richard Dante. This club has a very hospitable atmosphere, friendly service and delicious native Ethiopian cuisine. We had a nice crowd, and a co-worker and his wife come who hadn't been to my gigs before, as well as my 21-yr.-old daughter and her boyfriend!

PERFORMING WITH: Duo with the one and only "jazz cat" tenor man Billie Harris of St. Louis again. The venue's friendly owner, Nancy, staff (bartender Steve et al.), and guests all enjoy him! Many American Songbook standards and jazz "staples" including Latin standards were explored and interpreted, with vocals interspersed featuring yours truly. No cover or min.; spacious, inviting ambience with warm service in a former lemon packing house! Sample their tasty, made-to-order fondues, with a drink of your choice - Hip Kitty now has their liquor license so they have a terrific full bar!! On 8/26, my friend Vickey and two of her friends came by!

PERFORMING WITH: My "All Key'd Up" duo with terrific entertainer Leslie Baker on electric upright bass and vocals! I sang and played on the venue's Kawai digital grand. We featured best-known tunes like Just Friends, I'll Remember April, Yardbird Suite, Freddie Freeloader, etc., and Leslie sang Moon River, Here's That Rainy Day and a few others. My vocals included East of the Sun, September in the Rain, and I'm Beginning to See the Light - some of my favorites. We got adventurous with Switch in Time (Nestico) and Pensativa (a Bossa by Clare Fischer) and enjoyed the great blend of the two fine instruments. Although we only had a few guests, they had a great time including Ed Bradley, who got up and sang The Way You Look Tonight, Misty, and one of his old-school R&B faves, Until You Come Back to Me.

PERFORMING WITH: Drummer/singer Tom Mendola's "Summer Wind" trio, in which I play keyboard and key bass and sing a few tunes. Along with Tom and myself, Roger McCoy lends trombone, trumpet, and vocals. Classic ballroom dance selections are the focus, but Tom also features numerous pop dance tracks in-between. During the 1/2 hour breaks, CDs are played for continuous dancing. In this band, I sub for his noted regular pianist Marty Rosen.

PERFORMING WITH: Sax man/flutist/leader Jacob Johnston, equally gifted in style and technique, with fabulous Clarence Johnston lending great beats. I play keyboard and key bass on this gig. This elegant venue is very lively on Friday nights with folks enjoying "TGIF." Jacob selects some of the best straight-ahead jazz, blues, Latin jazz and pop jazz tunes, and picked "So What" as the opener, for which I had to play the bass lead on left hand! A nice co-worker, Roz, came to enjoy, and we hung out afterwards.

PERFORMING WITH: Duo with dapper "jazz cat" Billie Harris of St. Louis on tenor. I was referred to this venue by a Covina musician after he learned I was playing at Hip Kitty. American Songbook standards, many with my vocals, and jazz "staples" as only Billie can interpret them were featured. No cover or min. at this venue that is very popular with the local college crowd. The Press has jazz groups every Thurs., one of which appears every other week. Healthy and tasty, food here - Asian and Mexican specialties, hearty soups, and 'fab' vegetable lasagna! A friend, Vickey, came by - nice!

PERFORMING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell Orchestra - this 16-pce. big band is always "smokin'." Stevie's is Jimmy's weekly gig spot every Sunday night, and I subbed for his regular pianist. Jimmy's guest vocalist once again was the universally popular jazz/blues chanteuse La Dee Streeter - she "tore it up" with her personal favorites and the audience "ate it up"! Jimmy took some trumpet solos and sang a few of his own favorites. The joint was jumping as usual at Stevie's!

PERFORMING WITH: The Rhythm Kings as a quintet - "Leon" on guitar, Brian Friedman on sax and flute, Hershey Bell on trumpet, and Denis LaPron on drums - with myself on keyboard with key bass. On this primarily swing music gig, we played a disco tune, R&B, and rock. I prepared a few vocals such as "I'm Your Boogie Man," "I Will Survive," "Keep it Comin' On," and "That's the Way I Like It" - didn't get to do those, but I have the lyrics for future use. Leon shone on "I Feel Good" & "Mustang Sally." Crowd pleasers!

REHEARSING WITH: The Jimmy McConnell Orchestra - this 16-pce. big band is ALWAYS "cookin' on the front burner" and Jimmy secured a resonant Union Hall practice room to hold a special rehearsal. It was very fun and soulful crooner Clint Stacy of the Inkspots came and sang many songs - what a style. Some other notables were there beforehand, conducting a high school musician clinic - I saw Richard Simon again, and I got to meet Roger Neumann!

PERFORMING WITH: A jazz/blues quartet headed up by a fine jazz/blues singer with more than ample talent - Frances Coche'. Besides myself on keyboard, there was great sax man/flutist Ken Sherman, superb bassist Mike Flick, and excellent drummer Tim Hafer (now: the late - sadly), who originally referred Frances to me.. She had the 2nd set recorded, and the engineer was quite complimentary. We did all right with income even though at the Industry Café it all comes from tips. The numerous guests were entertained!
